Yes, of course you have to start of with something, which is reading and writing, because that's the easy part.
But after you're able to communicate to some extend you should fastly get away from dictionaries. When talking,
you have to get the words within a second, you have hardly any time to think about what you want to say.
And that's where you won't get anywhere at all if you're used to dictionaries. That's the sudden "block" people experience,
when they start talking a language.

You have to train that by having conversations; by picking up the words other people say and repeat it yourself.
Only that way you're going to really have that word right on your tongue when you need it. (The same goes for grammar too btw.)

Also, learning pronounciation soon enough is very important as well. Languages have very different sounds, which your mouth has to get used to perform,
and that takes alot of time and training, well, talking. It's never too early to start with that.

Everyone has his own ways to learn a language. There are visual types who learn most by writing and reading (that is what I am) and communicative types who learn most by repeating spoken words. If you learn a language you have to practice reading, speaking, listening and writing, but you have to chose which one you will practice most. My french teacher for example tries to do much stuff by speaking because she thinks it is important to know how to pronounce the words, especially in french, where nothing is pronounced as it is written (similar to english and mostly german).

I think through the internet it is actually easy to learn english. The bigger part of it is written in english. You can watch your favorite series or movies in the original language, Let's Plays on Youtube or read tutorials for competitive play or spriting or stuff that you are interested in.

I learned English throught online games. It was easy because you just need to know some words, than some more and than you know all the words. It is good too that you need to speak with other players.
